Commission: oil painting of family ranch

Here is the photo of the family ranch, texted by the client. This family ranch in South Dakota has been in the family for several generations. The photo is very dated, as you can see. The size requested was 36” x 24”.

The first process was to make a sketch, working on a more dynamic composition while keeping it very authentic. There was a request to add steers and a cowboy. A little Facebook research showed the steers are always black!

And after a little research on grass colors in South Dakota, here is the result!

Here is the actual painting on my dining room wall. The floater frame is real walnut wood.

The happy wife of my client received it just in time for Valentine’s Day!
